Michael A. Peters is Professor of Education at the University of Waikato, New Zealand and Emeritus Professor in Educational Policy, Organization, and Leadership at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. He is the executive editor of the journal, Educational Philosophy and Theory, and editor of three international ejournals, Policy Futures in Education, E-Learning and Digital Media, and Knowledge Cultures. His interests are in education, philosophy and social policy and he has written over sixty books. He is a lifelong Fellow of the New Zealand Academy of Humanities. His research interests are in educational philosophy, theory and policy studies with a focus on the significance of both contemporary philosophers (Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Heidegger) and the movements of poststructuralism, critical theory and analytic philosophy to the framing of educational theory and practice. He is also interested in philosophical and political economy questions of knowledge production and consumption. His major current projects include work on distributed knowledge, learning and publishing systems, and 'open education'. He has acted as an advisor to government on these and related matters in Scotland, NZ, South Africa and the EU.
Professor Besley returned to NZ in late 2011 after 11 years in universities in the United Kingdom and United States. From 2000-2006, she was Research Fellow and Lecturer at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. She spent six years in the USA, which included two years as a full tenured Professor at the Department of Educational Psychology and Counselling (College of Education, California State University San Bernardino) teaching masters students in the Counseling program.Tina spent four years at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), where for the last three years she was a Research Professor in the Department of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership in the College of Education. In this position she taught graduate programmes in Global Studies in Education and Critical Thinking. She also held a PhD seminar on Michel Foucault. She remains an Adjunct Professor at UIUC.
Prior to her career in academia Tina was a secondary school teacher, school counsellor and Head of Department (Guidance). She is MNZAC, a long-standing member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors having been involved on both the Auckland sub-commitee and the NZ membership committee.
Tina has wide research interests including: the philosophy of education, school counselling, educational politics and policy, research assessment in higher education, subjectivity, youth studies, interculturalism and global knowledge economy and cultures. Her recent work now extends to e-learning, social networking and Global Studies in Education.
